Hacking Your Emotional API: Emotional Intelligence in Practice

This 4 hour workshop will help you lay the foundations of building emotional intelligence. It is focused on exercises that demonstrate multiple techniques for understanding what you are feeling, how to express it constructively and to whom.

Being a good developer isn’t just about slinging code; we’re part of a community. Interacting with other humans means that emotions are involved.

But emotions are messy and uncomfortable, so why can’t you just ignore them? Because emotional skills are critical for doing your best work, and for working well on a team.

You may have heard that emotional intelligence is correlated with career success, but wondered just how to build those skills. In this workshop you will get to practice working with the items below.

I have no upcoming workshops at the moment, but I have a list of other oranizations that present similar workshops.

The Outline

Your API

We start with using the metaphor of an API to understand the foundations of emotional work. Using familiar language we explore how feelings work.

Observability of Self

The first step to understanding emotions is to know your own, which is often harder then it seems. We will learn how to check in on ourselves and better understand what happens below the surface.

Observability of a Group

Once you understand your own emotions, you will better understand other people. Next we'll learn to share our state with others to deepen, preserve and repair relationships.

Inter-process Communication

Emotions and experiences shape our motivations and create blockers for us. Buried emotions influence our behavior without us realizing. We will explore one way to find those hidden motivations and garbage-collect them.

Troubleshooting

Because we are imperfect beings, interpersonal communication can go wrong in many ways. But that's not the end of the story. We'll look at how to restore relationships, correct flawed communication, and learn to work together.

"Great session! Thank you for an informative, engaging discussion in a very safe space. I learmed a lot about emotions, communications, relationships, and myself. Loved it!"

"This was amazing. I think everyone should attend this"

"I love the establishment of psychological safety at the beginning and barring people from joining late - definitely helped make me feel better about sharing. Lots of great resources, so glad I was able to attend"
